The Very Beginning. 

Easter 2011"Beyond Oil and Gas: The Methanol Economy" gave rise to an approach to the author, Nobel laureate George Olah. He expressed interest in supporting us and the Danish Methanol Association, of which he remained honorary member until his death, 8 March 2017.

Since then, Agro Industries A/S have been striving to build a plant for George Olah's process for the hydrogenation of carbon dioxide to methanol. We have been on the road ever since and now we see a market. MAN has a total of 89 B&W ME-LGIM methanol marine engines on order - of which 19 are for Maersk. And on land, we have received planning permission for a methanol multi-fuel filling station.

Desert Power

It is this development that has led Denmark's Export Credit Agency to grant us seed-funding of a large-scale methanol factory in barren sunny deserts for 2.000 Metric Ton Per Day (MTPD) of bio/electro-methanol (750.000 t/yr).

 
This EKF grant has led to a close contact with Maersk, who has expressed an interest in the project as a customer. The company consumed a total of 11.09 million mt of marine fuels in 2021 equivalent to 20 million tons of methanol, indicating a growing market.

 
Since 2015, our sister company New Fuel A/S has also made its distinct contribution to market maturation as an ISCC certified methanol producer with as many as 10 audits so far.

Agro Industries A/S also houses the Danish Methanol Association and through the association we have participated in several attempts to create a market for sustainable methanol. In 2018, we managed with simple means to get a regular petrol City Car to run on methanol. The trial was so successful that it is now being repeated with 100 cars, all of which must run on biomethanol. We have developed a unique multi fuel methanol dispenser where cars in the test can refuel.
