Farmers Gasoline MD97

Farmers Gasoline MD is a trade name for biomethanol suitable for compression alcohol engines. MD stands for Methanol Diesel and may be attached a figure showing the methanol concentration.

Although methanol is an ideal fuel in the Spark-Ignition Engine (SI engine), it has a too low cetane number to operate in a Compression Ignition Engine (CI engine or Diesel engine); cetane number is only 4-5. This has been remedied by the addition of igniters in the form of a polyethylene glycol (PEG) derivative; treat rate ~ 3%.

All alcohols lack lubricity and are therefore always added a lubricant and in MD oleyl amine ethoxylate is used; treat rate 1-2‰

"Renewable Methanol with Ignition Improver Additive for Diesel Engines" in Energy Fuels 2020, 34, 379−388 by Paivi T. Aakko-Saksa et al. describe results that, overall, show the monofuel MD95 concept as a promising solution for smaller vessels equipped with 800−1200 kW engines. Link.

The advantage may be summarized:

  1. The engine becomes much more efficient. About 40-45% instead of 30-35 for a spark plug ignition engine. 
  2. The engine's characteristics are like a diesel engine. This means that it can regulate speed and take step loads that a diesel engine can. The torque is available from low speeds.
  3. Emissions are low. The level of hazardous substances such as HC and CO is almost non-existent. 

Reality has already taken these benefits for revenue in realized projects. "World’s 1st methanol-powered pilot boat launched" December 14, 2021, by Ajsa Habibic: The world’s first methanol propelled pilot boat has been launched by the Fastwater project, a consortium of Europe’s maritime research and technology leaders set to demonstrate the feasibility of retrofit and newbuild vessels to operate on methanol. 

Applications.

First Methanol-powered Diesel engine in Denmark - demonstrated at an Open House event on 9 March 2022 at Nordhavn A/S in Randers.

MD97 is primarily intended for shipping and heavy vehicles, but with methanol tenders and a mobile methanol-powered generator, it will be possible to establish electric operation on sections without electric overhead lines. Quick start could be achieved by using a flywheel battery, which is already on its way into metro operation.

The compression ignited Methanol-MD97 engine, developed by Swedish shipping services provider ScandiNAOS, has diesel-like performance and fulfils IMO Tier III requirements without after-treatments and is expected to reduce NOx by 75%.  Link.

*) Prices are indicative only. Reference to Methanex is for ordinary methanol and the site has actual and historical prices. There are no similar listing for biomethanol and e-methanol, but they will typically be 200-300 EUR higher or more per tonne.

He expressed interest in supporting us and the Danish Methanol Association, of which he remained honorary member until his death, 8 March 2017.
